Red Bull Racing influencing F1. According to reports, Red Bull played a prominent role in advocating for the introduction of the new sprint race format, which fans witnessed during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Under the new format, Free Practice One took place first, followed by the qualifying session for the grand prix on Friday. On Saturday, there was the sprint shootout, a condensed version of qualifying, followed by the sprint race in the afternoon. Finally, the F1 grand prix proceeded as usual on Sunday. Despite concerns about the safety implications of holding the sprint race in Baku, it has now emerged that Red Bull displayed the greatest enthusiasm for implementing this new format.
Michael Schmidt’s whistle blowing
F1 journalist Michael Schmidt reveals that the Austrian team believes they can benefit the most from reducing the number of practice sessions due to their superior simulation tools compared to the rest of the grid. Additionally, the mandatory tire usage helps minimize risks during the session.
Many anticipated that Red Bull would oppose the new arrangement, fearing it could jeopardize their continued dominance throughout the 2023 season. The team has triumphed in all five races thus far, with four of them featuring remarkable 1-2 finishes for Red Bull.
F1 current championship standings
Currently, Max Verstappen leads the drivers’ championship with 119 points, followed by his teammate Sergio Perez, who has accumulated 105 points. Red Bull has a commanding advantage over the rest of the teams, leading the constructors’ championship with 224 points, with Aston Martin in second place with 102 points.
